The Nokia X6-00 is the first Xseries phone from Nokia. It’s a touchscreen smartphone running the Symbian operating system, but it’s not based on the Nseries phones. Instead, the X series is an evolution of Nokia’s XpressMusic range, and this a welcome relief, as the XpressMusic phones seem to have been much more robust than the bug-ridden Nseries.

The Xseries moves the range substantially upmarket, and the X6 doesn’t come cheap. Nokia have taken the hugely popular mid-range 5800 and pimped it to the max. It’s physically almost the same size as the 5800, although a few millimetres have been shaved off, making it nice and slim to hold. At the same time the weight has increased slightly, lending it a purposeful and solid feel. It’s a good phone to hold, and certainly a lot less bulky than most touchscreens. In fact it’s one of the few touchscreen phones that you can easily operate single-handedly.

The display is a capacitative touchscreen, and is very responsive. It’s the same size and resolution as the 5800: 3.2 inches across and with 640×360 pixels. This gives it one of the smaller screen sizes amongst the high-end touchscreen phones, but that’s the price you pay for having a compact form factor. The screen isn’t the biggest, but it’s big enough to do the job. It offers a choice of virtual alphanumeric and QWERTY keypads with automatic display rotation. The user interface is nice, sharing much with the 5800, including the contacts bar which lets you easily access friends on your home screen. The contacts bar gives you access to dialling, call records and texts for up to 20 friends. The capacitative touchscreen is very responsive and we think that this is a very easy phone to use.

X stands for XpressMusic, so you’d expect the X6 to be pretty good in the music arena. And it is! The X6 comes with an Nseries music player and an FM radio. The music player handles most digital music formats, including MP3, WMA and AAC, and supports selection of songs by artist, composer, album and genre, with album graphics displayed. A dedicated audio chip and 3D surround sound from stereo speakers delivers excellent performance, especially when the bass booster, stereo widening and loudness effects are added. There’s also an 8-band graphic equaliser for additional control. Naturally a 3.5mm audio jack is included, so you can plug in your own headphones, and perhaps best of all is the massive 32GB of built-in memory. The optional Comes With Music feature gives you free unlimited music downloads for a whole year!

The X6 isn’t just a phone with a music player attached though. It’s also got an impressive camera. With 5 megapixels, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and dual LED flash, this is an excellent camera, and it punches above its 5 megapixel weight too. It’s the optics that matter most, and the X6 has quality, so don’t worry too much that there are cameras with more megapixels available. The X6 has a really excellent still camera. The video recording capability is good too, with recording at up to 640 x 480 pixels and 30 frames per second, which is standard definition TV quality. A second front-mounted video camera enables video calls to be made too.

A-GPS is included, which works with the new Ovi Maps. The phone has outstanding connectivity, with quadband GSM and triband 3G, so your phone will work wherever you take it on your travels. You should always have the fastest data connection too, with HSDPA giving downloads of up to 3.6 Mbps and WLAN available too for even faster data transfer in a WiFi zone. You can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth, or via USB cable, 3.5mm audio connection and a TV-Out socket.

Web browsing on the X6 is quite satisfactory. As mentioned, the screen isn’t the biggest available, but 3.2 inches is a respectable size, and the responsive touchscreen and fast data speeds make for a good mobile browsing experience overall. The X6 runs the same Series 60 5th Edition Symbian version 9.4 OS/interface as the 5800, so there are already a good number of apps available to download from the Ovi store.

The X6 comes with a massive 1320 mAh Li-Ion battery which gives very impressive performance. Theoretically the X6 is capable of 8.5 hours of talktime or 35 hours of music playback between charges. Although real world performance will never match this, it still means that you’ll be able to use the phone for several days between charges in most cases.

Overall, the X6 is a star performer. It’s a very high powered smartphone in a compact form, with a feeling of quality and durability. It may not have the biggest screen around, but the screen is by no means small, and is superbly responsive. The music player and camera are superb. The X6 ticks all the connectivity boxes and has outstanding memory and battery life to boot. And perhaps the best thing is that it’s built on a stable operating system that has been tested in the Nokia 5800, further refined and polished in the 5530 and now seems to be very robust and stable. Revolutionary it is not, but it is exactly what we’ve been wanting Nokia to do for such a long time: take an existing proven product and just make it better. The N97 does what it says on the tin. It’s a slimmed-down version of the Nokia N97. The N97 is Nokia’s flagship phone, so it can afford to have a few features shaved off in order to cut down on the size and the cost. There is no such thing as the perfect phone, but the N97 Mini acknowledges the compromises that have been made in cutting it down to a more manageable size, and the design is intelligent and very usable.

The N97 Mini looks almost exactly the same as the N97, except that it is smaller. The sliding QWERTY keyboard is just the same as on the N97, except that the 4-way navigation button has been removed to shave a few millimetres off the size. Even the funnily-positioned space bar is in exactly the same space, but the strange thing is that we’ve got used it completely and it feels quite natural now. The screen is smaller, but at 3.2 inches it is in no way a small screen, and is perfectly big enough for the job it has to do. It has the same ultra-high resolution as the N97 (640 x 360 pixels and 16 million colours) and is a superb display for watching videos, browsing the web or editing documents. Having the benefit of a physical keyboard makes the requirement for screen real estate less pressing, and the format works very well indeed. We’d prefer the N97 Mini’s keyboard plus touchscreen combination to a pure virtual touchscreen setup any day.

Like its big brother, the N97 Mini has an information-packed and customisable home screen, packed with widgets streaming live information such as facebook, email, texts, the date & time, weather forecasts and RSS feeds. Yes, we know it’s not an iPhone, but with the mature Symbian operating system backing it up, there are more than enough apps to keep most people happy. We love the way that the home screen gives one-touch access to most of the features that you’ll use regularly, and the integration seems to work very well.

Browsing web pages works very well. The screen is slightly smaller than the N97 of course, so the font can sometimes be rather small, but there are easy controls to scroll and zoom, and the web browsing experience is generally very good. The always-on 3G internet connection helps, and with HSDPA giving download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps and WiFi offering 54 Mbps, you can almost imagine that your using a laptop rather than a souped-up mobile phone.

The camera is the same as the one on the N97, which in turn is essentially the same as the camera in the old N96. But it’s an excellent camera nevertheless, and outperforms most smartphones. The sensor is a respectable 5 megapixels, but it’s the quality of the Carl Zeiss optics that makes it perform so well. The dual LED flash isn’t as powerful as the xenon flash on the Sony Ericsson Satio, but it’s more than a match for most camera phones. Video recording is excellent too, with the ability to record at VGA format and 30 frames/second. A secondary front-facing camera is available for video calling too.

There’s a powerful Nseries music player included, and an FM radio with RDS too. As you’d expect, the music quality is top-notch, and not only is a good quality set of stereo headphones supplied, but the 3.5mm AV connection lets you plug in your own headphones too. The memory isn’t as large as in the N97, but still, with 8GB of built-in memory and the ability to add a 16GB microSD card, you can hardly say that the memory is small. The maximum storage capacity would give you enough space for between 6,000 and 10,000 music tracks or a couple of dozen full length movies!

The N97 Mini also has built-in GPS and a-GPS receivers, and you can use these to find your location, to geo-tag photos and to navigate. Nokia Maps is included, as well as a digital compass, and a 10-day trial licence of a Walk-and-Drive navigation system.

One compromise that the designers have made to reduce the overall size and weight of the device is to reduce the capacity of the battery. The battery is a 1200 mAh Li-Ion battery, instead of the 1500 mAh one supplied with the N97. Despite having a smaller LCD display, the N97 does suffer as a consequence, although the battery performance is no worse than comparable touchscreen smartphones.

To wrap up, we feel that the N97 Mini is a perfect example of an intelligent compromise. Yes, the screen is smaller, and yes, the battery life is shorter. But the phone is significantly slimmer, lighter and quite a bit cheaper too, bringing the power of the N97 within reach of a whole new market segment. The big bugbear with the N97 was probably the lumbering old Symbian operating system under the hood. Symbian phones often have a tendency to freeze or reboot at the most annoying times, and the N97 was no exception. The Symbian OS is still present in the N97 Mini of course, but it seems that Nokia have tweaked and polished it and the whole system feels more robust and stable. N97 Mini users can benefit from all those early adopters who beta-tested the N97 on Nokia’s behalf! It’s funny, but somehow the “lite” version of the N97 feels like a better product than the original. It’s proof that size and specification aren’t everything. By taking the time to test and to gather user feedback, Nokia have polished the rough edges of their flagship product and created a new and better one. Ah, now if only they could do that with every phone release!

Nokia’s N900 looks like a souped-up version of the flagship N97 smartphone. In a way it is, but in fact, under the bonnet lurks something new to the word of mobile phones. It’s Nokia’s new Linux-based Maemo operating system.

But the first thing you notice about the N900 isn’t the operating system. It’s the price. Wow, that’s a lot of money! The second thing you notice is the size. Wow, it’s huge! The third thing you notice is the weight. Wow, this is the heaviest phone on the market!

Haven’t put the phone back on the shelf yet? That’s good, because then you start to notice some good things. First the slide-out QWERTY keyboard. You begin to realise why the phone is heavy. It’s because a keyboard this big weighs a ton. But that means that it’s easy to use, and you can out-type even those BlackBerry guys. We think that the keyboard isn’t actually as good as the one on the N97, but that’s just a quibble. You’ll also notice the screen, and once again appreciate why the N900 is so big. This is a fantastic screen – Nokia’s best so far – measuring 3.5 inches across and with an incredible 800 x 480 pixel resolution. It’s a touchscreen of course. Shame that it’s resistive though, not capacitative, so you sometimes have to press it a couple of times before it responds, unless you use a stylus.

The N900 also has a great camera. It’s essentially the same camera as the one on the N97 and N97 Mini, with 5 megapixels, Carl Zeiss optics, Tessar lens, autofocus, dual LED flash and geo-tagging. The video camera is outstanding, recording at an incredible 800 x 480 pixels. There’s also a front-mounted VGA web camera, though at the time of this review we weren’t able to establish whether this can be used for video calling. There’s a digital media player, with all the features that you’d expect, and an FM transmitter. Bizarrely, there’s no FM radio, although it is possible to install one using a third-party download. We know that a lot of people like their apps, but really some things should come as standard. Since when have phone manufacturers started treating their devices like flat-packed furniture? A-GPS with Ovi Maps is included, though.

Is there any reason so far why you should choose the N900 over the N97? We think not. The only reason then would be the Maemo operating system. We’re going to stick our necks out here and say something really unpopular. Whenever we say this kind of thing, we always get hate mail, so it would be nice if the haters just gave it a rest this time OK, here goes: if you buy a phone with an untested operating system, you had better be prepared to roll your sleeves up and do some really hard work making your phone operational. It’s always the same. If you buy the N900 you’ll be a beta-tester for Nokia. Lots of stuff won’t work at first. Perhaps some things will never work. If you can live with that and like a challenge, go ahead. Otherwise avoid. We’ve already mentioned the lack of an FM radio and video calling. Other things that are missing include MMS, and there are few apps currently available from the Ovi store, although this will no doubt improve as time goes by.

But there are good things too. The Maemo OS is very fast, and is supported by fast hardware too, enabling it to deliver on its promise of genuine multi-tasking. The Mozilla-based web browser is superb, and as a mobile web browser the N900 is hard to beat, with its lightning-fast HSPA and WiFi support. Build quality is solid, there’s bags of memory (up to 48GB), and audio quality is excellent.

So, the N900 isn’t really an ideal mobile phone for many users, but for someone who really wants an internet tablet with calling features added, it could be just the thing.

We witnessed some serious demand of touch screen phones last year. Most of the manufacturers leaned towards this market share and released their own models. It may sound strange, but until recently, the biggest manufacturer, Nokia, stood aside from the trend. During the spring however, a photo of their first touch screen phone emerged on the Internet, by the codename of Tube. All kinds of rumors about the new product had set, but the Finnish company didn’t utter a word. Later, the same phone had been spotted in the latest Batman movie, creating even more underground buzz. Nokia said that the unit has been produced exclusively for the super hero, but didn’t deny that it may become a reality.

After this, word spread that the device would be announced in October and this turned out to be true. At the Nokia Remix event in London, the Finns officially presented their first Symbian S60 touch screen phone, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. It finds its place in the higher-end of the manufacturer’s XpressMusic series and is offered at an affordable price, which means that it’s targeted at a wider range of customers. This information attracted many people’s attention, but this was also due to the 3.2-inch widescreen with a resolution of 640×360 pixels, built-in Wi-Fi, GPS and HSDPA support. So, has the time come for the iPhone to have a worthy opponent and for Nokia to finally enter the big Touch game ?

We’ll begin with the content of the package. Here’s what you’ll find inside it:

We found the carrying case a bit strange, because it isn’t standard and the phone can be taken out from both ends. On the other hand, it’s going to provide better protection for the screen than a velveteen one. The included 8GB card is a nice extra, since you won’t need to go to the store to buy one. However, what caught our attention was the hand band. It’s elastic and has a piece of plastic attached to it, which looks very much like a plectrum. Actually, it can be used as a stylus, in case you want to do something quickly and you don’t fell like taking the stylus out.

At first glance, the only thing that gives you a hint that the 5800 belongs to Nokia’s music series is the inscription on the upper end of the front, which is dominated almost thoroughly by the screen, making it pretty different from previous XpressMusic phones. As we spent some time holding it however, the feeling reminded us of the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic. The body is made of plastic that’s glossy on the edges. We didn’t like the material very much, as it gives the impression of something cheap and fragile. Don’t get us wrong, it looks good, but we expected more from the first S60 touch screen phone.

The dimensions and the weight are well balanced and the phone feels handy to use. Compared to the iPhone, it’s thicker, but also narrower. The 5800 however, has a 3.2-inch display (the iPhone has a 3.5-inch one) with a 16:9 format, which is the standard for widescreen television and a resolution of 640×360 pixels (the Apple’s offering has 480×320 pixels). Both competitors score equally when it comes to colors – 16 million. We have to note, that the image quality is higher on the Nokia phone – its display is brighter and has higher contrast. However, if you expose it to direct sunlight, the image gets almost totally washed away, which is a pity, having in mind that previous 16 million color Nokia phones didn’t suffer from the same issue. In addition, it becomes a real fingerprint mess when you use it for a longer period of time, and since a cloth for cleaning it up isn’t included in the box, we warmly recommend that you have one with you.

It’s important to tell you that the 5800’s screen utilizes the resistive technology. This means that you can use whatever object to press it, while the iPhone uses the capacitive technology, meaning that the only way to control it is by fingers. You can learn more about the different touch screen technologies from our article. We needed some time to become skilled enough in order to use it without making so many mistakes. At first we had the impression that the screen isn’t very sensitive. The slight vibration when pressing it couldn’t help us a lot, because it’s too soft and cannot be adjusted. We eventually learned that we should tap, rather than just touch it, which reminds us of the BlackBerry Storm. We’ll talk more on it in the Interface section.

In spite of the touch screen, you’ll also need to use the keys of the 5800 XpressMusic. There are three of them on the front, right below the display. The left and right ones serve as send and end keys and the middle one grants you access to the main menu (on press) or to the task manager (on hold) and blinks when there’s a missed call or a received message. You won’t experience any trouble using them, as their pressing is felt very clear. There is a surprise waiting for you right below the camera for video conversations – a sensor key… more on that later. Now let’s take a look at the top side. It houses the microUSB port, the 3.5mm jack, the charging port and the power button.

On the right are the camera shutter and the volume rocker, and between them you’ll find a slider for locking/unlocking the display. You’ll feel a strong vibration as you slide it. Our only remark is about the volume rocker is that it is nearly flush with the body and doesn’t feel distinct enough when you touch it. On the opposite side are the stereo speakers, the microSD card slot and the SIM card slot. No, there is no mistake here – the SIM card should be inserted on the side and you don’t need to remove the battery. However, if you decide to change it or take it out, you’ll have to remove the back panel and the battery. Then, you’ll need the stylus, which can be found in the lower right corner. It’s made of plastic and cannot be expanded. It’s highly unlikely to lose it, because it stays firmly fixed in its place with a lot. In case such an accident happens, don’t forget that there’s an additional one in the package.

The second new model is the 6303 classic – Nokia targets it to people that like what the 6300 currently offers for its price. The 6303 classic has modest features compared to the 6700 classic, but is better than the 6300, with a 3.2-megapixel camera, equipped with a dual LED flash and a 3.5mm stereo jack. Its price is £117 similar to the one of the 6300, but unfortunately it is a tri-band phone, for Europe only.

Nokia 2700 classic is the most affordable of the three, at a price of 65 euro ($85) and Nokia claims it offers a very good price/functionality ratio. The 2700 classic offers a 2-megapixel camera, music player and a microSD slot for up to 2GB of memory. As it is a quad-band GSM, it can be used with any GSM network around the globe.

The three new Nokia phones are scheduled for the second quarter of the year.
