The hardware sees you get a 4-inch touchscreen display that dominates proceedings. Beneath this there are three additional buttons that allow you to access menus, the home screen, and skip back a step, and in between this there is even two white tiny LEDs that give you notifications as to what is going on although you will no doubt loose track over time. A dedicated camera button and volume controls pepper the side.

For the Droid or G1 fans out there, there is no slide-out keyboard. Get over it.

Around the back you’ll get an 8.1-megapixel digital camera top centre and beneath that a flash – something not present on the HTC Hero or Apple iPhone.

Although impressive, specs are nothing out of the ordinary, certainly not for your top-of-the-range model and that means you get virtually every tech acronym you can think of including HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DLNA, A-GPS, 3.5mm jack and Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Storage is provided by an 8GB microSD card in the box and connects to your computer/charger via Micro-USB on the top. Unfortunately we weren’t able to confirm what the storage allocation for applications is, but let’s hope it is more than 256MB as with the Motorola Droid.

It is large, comparable to the Apple iPhone, but not as big as the HTC HD2. Underneath all that User Experience you get Android 1.6. Sony Ericsson are currently sending out mixed messages as to whether or not the handset will sport Android 2.0 when it eventually launches in February, with some spokespeople for the company saying it will and others not so sure.

What this means is that you will miss out on some features, like the ability to search the contents of your phone at the press of a button and Google Maps Navigation (US only). With a strong integrated interface in the guise of what Sony Ericsson is calling Nexus, you get, like the Sense UI from HTC, a lot more friendly functionality than Google offers as standard.

Of course you do get that “standard” approach. The Nexus UX Platform sits on top of Android 1.6 meaning you can run all the standard Android apps as well as apps designed for the phone and UX. Unlike Motorola and HTC, both of whom have also decided to customise the Android experience, Sony Ericsson is hoping for further development by releasing a WebSDK.

The move means that developers will be able to develop applications specifically for Sony Ericsson handsets (the X10 is the first of many) that work only for Sony Ericsson. It’s a brave move and one that will be interesting to watch. As a developer are you really going to be bothered to develop an app for an as yet unproven smartphone when you’ve got Apple, Android, Palm’s WebOS, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Samsung’s Bada and BlackBerry to develop for as well?

Either way in reality it seems that Sony Ericsson are playing the “you can play with us too” card and regardless of this forging on with their own apps to impress and improve on the Android OS.

In steps Timescape and Mediascape. Timescape is a communications app, which aggregates email, Facebook, Twitter, IM, and SMS into one big lifestream that you can navigate through. Each “event” is represented by a tile, which you can tap to view in more detail, or long-press to get a preview of. The experience is very “Aero” from Windows Vista and in practice not the easiest thing to read.

Each tile has a button marked with an “oo” infinity symbol. Hitting that will take you to related content – which could be content from the person in question, or it could be web content related to whatever is on the tile. It’s a bit like HTC’s contacts feature that shows you all the contact you’ve had with that person, however it’s no Xobni. The list can be filtered by medium, and you can reply to individual messages within the application.

Mediascape is the other “signature” application. It’s built around music, video and images and organises all three on your device. It incorporates players for all three, too, and can hook into various bits of online content. YouTube was named explicitly, but we’d expect Last.fm and perhaps Flickr to show up here too with talk of Spotify being banded around at our briefing (something that might be harder to do than Sony Ericsson realizes thanks to Spotify’s poor API).

Items in Mediascape also have an infinity button and pressing this will again summon related content. For a band, that could be songs on your device, YouTube videos, or even other artists that are similar to whatever you’re listening to. The overlaid controls of this section looked quite similar to the Zune HD’s UI, though that’s only a good thing.

Then there is the image viewer in Mediascape that supports facial recognition. What this means is that you can tag up to five people in a photo and then the handset will attempt to identify those people in other images too – the more you tag, the more accurate it is, very much like Apple’s face recognition feature in iPhoto. The feature can also hook in with your contacts list – you can tap a person in a photo to call them, for instance, however won’t talk to Facebook or Flickr.

Those apps, and others for the Nexus UX, will be available from the PlayNow store.

Elsewhere and it’s pretty standard Android fare for the handset. The software is, and acts, as you would expect for an Android 1.6 handset, however for some reason, one that continues to baffle us, is no multi-touch support. With a touchscreen so large with no keyboard we think it’s a catastrophic move, but then hey, what do we know?

As for performance? Well it’s a little too early to say. The models we looked at both in London and New York have all been pre-production, and early builds at that. It certainly wasn’t as zippy as we would have hoped, certainly for a device with a Snapdragon chipset, but then its too early to tell whether this is just because it’s early code, or because Sony Ericsson has baked in so many graphical, almost PS3-like niceties, that it’s buckled under the weight. We expect it’s the former.

How to review the LG Arena? It’s a brilliant all-rounder. The list of things it doesn’t do is shorter than the list of things that it does do, so here we go: it isn’t a smartphone (LG have yet to enter the smartphone market (we nearly wrote “arena”) and it doesn’t have an 8 megapixel camera. That’s all it doesn’t do (it doesn’t make the coffee or run you a bath either, but LG are rumoured to be working on this.)

So, regular readers of Mobile Phones UK will know that we lurve LG touchscreen phones. And we just lurve the Arena. Is it LG’s best phone so far? Probably. It’s a gorgeous phone to look at. It’s quite a bit smaller than the iPhone 3G, which is a bonus, although this does mean that the screen is slightly smaller – but at 3 inches it’s still a whopper. The brushed metal finish is lurvely too and radiates quality. But the best thing about the Arena becomes apparent when you turn it on: it’s the drop-dead high resolution screen. With 480×800 pixels, it’s a truly high definition display and is absolutely at the cutting edge.

The Arena is the first phone to showcase LG’s new S-Class touchscreen user interface. Based on a “cube” idea, which you can see in the photo above, the screen contains a 3D cube that you can turn around to reveal one of 4 sides: contacts, widgets, shortcuts and a customisable home screen. It’s kind of fun, but doesn’t really add anything. But the touchscreen UI itself is first class. We’ve always been a fan of the LG touch phones, from the Prada to the Renoir, and the Arena is at least as good. Watch the youtube video below to learn more.

The Arena may not have an 8 megapixel camera (choose the LG Renoir KC910 for this) but it is a very well balanced multi-media device. The camera is 5 megapixels, with autofocus and an LED flash. It’s clearly not in the same league as the 8 megapixel monsters such as the Renoir, Samsung i8510 or Sony Ericsson C905, but it’s still a good camera. It records high quality video too, and you can use the front-mounted camera to make video calls. The music player can play all popular formats, including MP3, AAC and WMA, and supports Dolby Mobile for high fidelity virtual surround sound. A welcome addition is the 3.5mm headphone jack, which enables you to plug in any headphone with a standard connector. An FM radio is included too. The Arena also comes with a built-in FM transmitter, which enables you to play music wirelessly through a car or home stereo.

When it comes to memory, the Arena delivers the goods in abundance. Not only does it comes with 8GB of flash memory, but it also supports microSD cards up to 40GB. This dwarfs the memory capacity of even the iPhone! LG clearly are wanting users to make full use of all the multimedia functionality that the Arena is capable of, so whether you have a massive music collection, or want to watch full length movies on your phone in high definition, this phone is eager and willing to do the job.

There are so many features available, we can’t cover everything in this review. We need to mention that the phone supports assisted GPS with geo-tagging of photos. We also need to mention that it’s connectivity is outstanding – as well as the FM transmitter and 3.5mm headphone socket, it supports Bluetooth, USB and WiFi. It’s a 3G phone with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps for rapid downloading of data, and it’s equipped with an excellent web browser.

That’s the end of our whirlwind tour of the LG Arena KM900! The touchscreen phone market is getting very crowded in 2009, and there are some brilliant phones competing for your attention, but we feel that the Arena is probably the best phone to be released in the first quarter of 2009, and we expect it to be a massive hit. Tech-heads will probably still prefer the Samsung Omnia or HTC Touch HD though.

The second new model is the 6303 classic – Nokia targets it to people that like what the 6300 currently offers for its price. The 6303 classic has modest features compared to the 6700 classic, but is better than the 6300, with a 3.2-megapixel camera, equipped with a dual LED flash and a 3.5mm stereo jack. Its price is £117 similar to the one of the 6300, but unfortunately it is a tri-band phone, for Europe only.

Nokia 2700 classic is the most affordable of the three, at a price of 65 euro ($85) and Nokia claims it offers a very good price/functionality ratio. The 2700 classic offers a 2-megapixel camera, music player and a microSD slot for up to 2GB of memory. As it is a quad-band GSM, it can be used with any GSM network around the globe.

The three new Nokia phones are scheduled for the second quarter of the year.

World: Say hello to the RIM BlackBerry Bold. *Cue dramatic music.*

You may know it as the RIM BlackBerry 9000, but on Sunday, Research In Motion officially took the wraps off the highly anticipated smartphone, complete with a new name. The “Bold” is in reference to the smartphone’s gorgeous display, but it’s also bold in that it represents a number of new moves for the company. Oh, BlackBerry Bold, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways.

The bold and the beautiful
As we just mentioned, the device gets its name from its screen. The BlackBerry Bold features a half-VGA (480×320 pixel resolution) and a 65,000-color display. During some initial product testing, research group participants repeatedly called the screen “bold” and “brilliant.” The Brilliant moniker didn’t really jibe with the company, thus the BlackBerry Bold was born.

So just how bold is it? Well, RIM stopped by our office late last week to show us the device, and let me just tell you, I was absolutely blown away. I can pretty much say I’ve never seen a better-looking display on a smartphone. Colors pop off the screen, and it’s really amazing how sharp and crisp everything looks on the display.

We watched a couple of videos, and for the first time, we didn’t notice any of the pixelation or blurriness that you typically get with phones. In addition, the menu interface has been revamped with a much more modern look and icons. Also, as you can see from the images, the BlackBerry Bold boasts a new design. It’s more elegant than models past, with curvier edges and a silver trim that complements the black casing.

If you turn it over, you’ll also notice that the back has a leatherette texture. No more slick plastic. RIM will sell replaceable backplates in different colors, including blue, gray, and red, if you want to individualize your phone a bit. The BlackBerry Bold measures 4.5 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by half an inch deep, and it weighs 4.7 ounces.

Kevin Michaluk at Crackberry.com took a gamble, buying one on eBay, and posted a hands-on review. He made a good comparison of the device to the Motorola Q9h.

Finally, the BlackBerry Bold has a QWERTY keyboard that RIM likened to a modernized Curve keyboard, but I’m not really seeing it. Instead, it reminded me more of the BlackBerry 8830.

Now, I know some of you 8800 series users had issues with the keyboard, but I tried it out, and it’s pretty easy to use–relatively large buttons with some spacing between the keys.

There’s a heaping of wireless options on the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) BlackBerry Bold, but the most appetizing and notable item is the HSDPA/UMTS (850/1900/2100) support.

It’s the first such equipped BlackBerry, and we all know that it’s been a long time coming. RIM says the delay for bringing such a device to the market is that it wanted to make sure that battery life wouldn’t be sacrificed at the expense of including the 3.5G technology. Hey, whatever the reason, we’re just finally happy to have it.

You also get integrated Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g), Bluetooth 2.0 with full A2DP support, and built-in GPS (enhanced and assisted).

Horsepower
The RIM BlackBerry Bold is equipped with a 624MHz Intel PXA270 processor, whereas previous BlackBerrys had 312MHz processors, so technically, you should enjoy smoother and faster performance.

During our briefing, there were a few hiccups in performance, but we’re going to keep our fingers crossed and chalk it up to the fact that it wasn’t a final unit. There’s also 128MB of flash memory and 1GB of onboard memory, which is all supplemented by the microSD/SDHC expansion slot (supports up to 16GB cards).

Multimedia, Web, and other good stuff
You still with me? I know this post is getting a bit lengthy, but there are just a few more highlights to note. First, the Bold includes an improved Web browser (thank goodness), with the option to view pages in a full desktop HTML style or a mobile version, and you can now more easily navigate pages with the trackball, which acts like a mouse cursor, and zoom in and out.

As for multimedia, the smartphone is equipped with a 2-megapixel camera with video-recording capabilities and up to 5x zoom. The media player also continues to support numerous audio and video formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC, DivX4, and WMV3 files, and the phone is equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack. By the way, the Bold has some pretty powerful speakers–none of that weak, tinny junk.

Oh, and hey, what’s this? It’s makes calls, and sends and receives e-mails, you say? Yes, you’ll still get all of the voice and messaging features of previous BlackBerrys, and the handset will also come preloaded with Dataviz’s Documents to Go suite, for document viewing and editing.
